Designers imagine a rugged variant with the Volkswagen Atlas Basecamp Concept

Back in April the Volkswagen group released the Volkswagen Atlas Basecamp Concept for the world to see at the New York International Auto Show. They took the family-friendly and adventurous 2019 Volkswagen Atlas SEL trim and made it even more athletic. Alex Earle, who is the Exterior Design Manager in the California Volkswagen office, wanted to build a Volkswagen Atlas that would appeal to the outdoors types, especially mountain bikers who aren't afraid of dirt, falling, and getting back up again. Unlike some concept vehicles that are completely out there, the Volkswagen Atlas Basecamp Concept is 100% believable: The concept vehicle comes in a Platinum Gray and Black matte paint job, and there are dashes of orange along the exterior For getting to rugged trailheads, the Atlas Basecamp Concept has a 1.5-inch lift and extremely chunky all-terrain tires by the brand fifteen52 (in fact, these are concept tires that are going to be available during the fall) There's a unique rack system that has an eye-catching strip of LED lights so you easily see after the end of a hard day biking When this was displayed at the auto show, the Atlas Basecamp Concept was also towing along a popup camper with a kitchenette, canopy, and queen size bed Despite the concept's realistic nature, there's no sign that a production version will be coming to our Frederick dealership, though we're crossing out fingers that the color will become part of an appearance package for shoppers to show off in Germantown or on their commute into Gaithersburg. In the meantime, you can still purchase or lease a regular (and still fantastic!) 2019 Volkswagen Atlas for your Leesburg VA adventures. Notable features on the SEL trim that they based the Basecamp concept off of include a hands-free tailgate, the ability to tow up to 5,000 pounds around Hagerstown and beyond (when properly equipped), full LED lights, adaptive cruise control, leatherette seating, and much more.

The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas earns a 'Best Large Utility' award from MotorWeek

Volkswagen set out to sell a more family-friendly vehicle when they introduced the Volkswagen Atlas during the 2017 model year, and from the get-go the three-row, seven-passenger SUV has been a hit with parents we serve from Germantown and beyond. And that's not simply us getting a bit biased, which is bound to happen when we're talking about our favorite brand. Automotive organizations have also seen how well the Volkswagen Atlas performs and have rightly rewarded it. For the second year in a row, the Volkswagen Atlas was named the Best Large Utility vehicle for the 2019 MotorWeek Drivers' Choice award! Award Breakdown Admittedly, there are a lot of auto awards out there where it is clear the brand who pays the most in advertising is the brand that takes home the title. However, that's not the case with the MotorWeek award, as makers cannot simply buy their way to the title. When MotorWeek sets out to name the victors, they take over 150 different cars, trucks, and SUVS and look at the following categories: performance, technology, practicality, fuel efficiency, and dollar value. This ensures that well-rounded models take the title in their segments, and that's exactly what happened to the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas! Highlights on the Award-Winning Volkswagen Atlas Below, we'll focus on three area's that Volkswagen shoppers tend to ask us about. Performance: to get around Germantown, you'll have either a 2.0L turbocharged engine or a 3.6L V6 for additional power. You can also get available 4Motion® all-wheel drive for more traction control in all conditions. Technology: all Volkswagen Atlas models have a standard touchscreen, as well as Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto®. You can connect to your three-row SUV with the VW Car-Net smartphone app, and for safer driving between the home in Leesburg VA and the office in Hagerstown, you can get advanced safety technologies like pedestrian monitoring, blind spot alerts, and more. Practicality: people tend to buy three-row vehicles for the space, and loading cargo out back is a lot easier with the available remote power liftgate or the hands-free liftgate. It's also important to note that even adults will feel comfortable in all three rows. If you want to see how the award-winning 2019 Volkswagen Atlas will be a great fit for your family needs, stop into our Frederick dealership for a test drive!
