Volkswagen Beetle History

The VW Beetle was first introduced in the U.S. on January 8th, 1949. Throughout the years it has hit multiple milestones. Here's a closer look of the history behind the VW Beetle.

  • 1949 - The Type 1, which was the original name for the Beetle, was first delivered to New York.
  • 1950 - The Beetle became a success and sales went from two in 1949 to 328 in 1950.
  • 1959 - The "Think Small" advertising campaign began and VW Beetle sales rose even higher.
  • 1960s - The Beetle ranked as the top-selling foreign-made car in the U.S.
  • 1968 - No longer called the Type 1, the Beetle became the official name.
  • 1971 - Volkswagen introduces the Super Beetle and Super Beetle Convertible.
  • 1972 - 15,007,034 VW Beetles are produced worldwide.
  • 1977 - The first generation Beetle ends it production in the U.S.
  • 1979 - The Beetle convertible production is also ended in the U.S.
  • 1998 - The New Beetle is debuted and Americans adore its charm, including the in-dash flower vase.
  • 2003 - The New Beetle Cabriolet is also introduced.
  • 2011 - A third-generation Beetle is introduced.
  • 2012 - The Beetle convertible comes back, along with special-edition '50s, '60s, and '70s tribute versions.
  • 2019 - U.S. ends the 70 year reign of the VW Beetle with Final Edition models.
